British Summertime …..which translates to one less hour to stitch!

Hi all, yes, summertime has officially started with the clocks going back an hour, but you wouldn’t believe it judging by the weather today.

It’s dull and dreary and a little breezy……..do I need a better excuse to stay in and stitch?

I’ve been working on a few projects since we last spoke and have one finish to share with you.

I have just finished my 2nd panel for the ‘The Joyful World’ Sal from The Snowflower Dairies.

I’ve been trying for the last four days to get a decent photo that shows the true colour of the Honeydew Green Belfast Linen it’s stitched

on but have now given up and found a stock photo to show the shade,

Don’t you just love that cute little rabbit and squirrel!

You’ll notice there's a small split in the fabric. It was there when I unpacked it, which is unusual for zweigart, but it’s not a problem as I plan to flat finish the panels, which was lucky.

The second stitch I worked on this month was ‘Gratitude’ from Cottage Garden Samplings, The Songbird’s Garden Series.

#abibellastitch on Instagram was hosting  #stitchasia for the month of March and this project was perfect to stitch on because it was designed by Vinniey P S Tann.

I didn’t get as much done on that one as I hoped because I got obsessed with my ‘Unfinished Sampler’.

As I mentioned last time, Michelle from #mommalovesyougbmichelle  on flosstube and Instagram,  had purchased un unfinished sampler and charted it.  She then gave us the challenge of finishing it.

I had the idea of celebrating my dad’s childhood and the summers he spent Hopping in Kent.

Well, to say it was a challenge is an understatement!

How those young girls, back in the 1800’s worked all those beautiful vintage samplers without the aid of strong magnifiers, lights and charting software is just beyond me.  I can’t tell you the admiration I have for every single one them.

Anyway, here’s what I came up with.

I just have a little bit to finish on the border top and bottom and then ‘Maude’ (as Michelle named the first unfinished sampler) will be finished and ready for the frame, which I ordered today.

I must admit I’m feeling a little bit pleased with myself that this is ‘my sampler’, totally unique and it’s in celebration of a very special person, my dad. William Hyde.

This is stitched on 32ct Vintage Country Mocha Belfast Linen., using Weeks Dye Works and DMC threads.

My dad, aged a 7 in the hop bines with his aunt and 3 cousins ( 1929)

Another SOLAK Quilt

 March 2008

This time I stitched four squares for a ten year old boy called Timmy who loves Pokemon.

Just like the Sponge Bob squares for the previous quilt, I didn't have a clue about Pokemon characters and couldn't find any pre charted designs to work from so I headed for my old friend Google again.

I found a few children's colouring pages that were suitable to chart and got started stright away.

Here's the results.

SOLAK Squares

February  2008

In between my card making I’m still stitching squares that go to make the quilts for Stitches Of Love And Kindness.

I went along to their web site data base and noticed that a little boy called Declan had requested that his quilt be made up of characters from Sponge Bob Square Pants or Finding Nimo if possible.

Only five of the twelve squares needed had been stitched and his name had been on the list for a little while so I immediatly signed up to do the rest.

It didn’t take me long to realize why no one had signed up to do the rest, because when I started looking for charts there were none, well not that I could fine anyway.

I was getting close to pulling my hair out but there was no way I was going to let Declan down now that I had said I would stitch the squares, so I had to come up with something by myself.

Apart from Sponge Bob himself I hadn’t even heard of the other characters so it was Google to the rescue and eventually I came across some children’s colouring pages that I was able to chart myself.

Stitches Of Love And Kindness

January 2008

I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s only so many walls in my flat where I can hang my finished projects so I was looking for some other way to satisfy my craving to stitch.

My friend Nicki suggested a Yahoo group that she thought might solve my problem, a group called Stitches Of Love And Kindness or SOLAK for short.
They are a completely non-profit group that makes quilts and cushions for children and adults with long term and terminal illnesses, which is a wonderful thing to do I feel.

The way it works is that people make a request for a quilt or cushion and say what sort of things they like i.e., flowers, cars, animals, all sorts of things and then the lady who runs the group lists them all on a data base with the details of the theme.
There are nine spaces for each of the nine squares that are needed for each quilt and all you have to do is go into it and sign up for as many or as few squares as you like.  The squares are then sent to Sylvia and then she sends them on the the ladies who do all the quilting, Nicki being one of them.  The good thing is that there's no time frame, so no preasure, although obviously the quicker they are stitched the sooner the recipient will have their quilt or cushion. If you pop across to Stitches of Love and Kindness  you can see some of the finished quilts and cushions.

Needless to say I joined the group and the very first quilt I stitches squares for was for one of Nicki’s pupils at the school where she teaches.
He’s a boy called Liridon,  who origanaly came from Albania but having fled Kosovo now lives in Switzerland where Nicki has taught him for two years.
The theme for his quilt was to be cars and flags of the world so I signed up to stitch four squares.

Union Jack

Flag of Albania

Mini

VW Beetle

Lirion and his family had no idea that the quilt was being made and they couldn’t believe that so many ladies had stitch these squares and made them into a quilt especially for him.

The good news is that Lirion is undergoing treatment and is making good progress.
